Department of Education has revised its policy regarding disability determination to include determinations of disability by the Social Security Administration for forgiveness of student loans.
Previously, if you had been determined to be disabled by the Social Security Administration and were receiving SSDI, you weren’t automatically eligible for student loan forgiveness. The Department of Education would still need to send you through their own evaluation process. DoE has decided that a finding by the SSA of “Medical Improvement Not Expected” would satisfy DoE’s question of if a person had a long term disability. This should make it easier to qualify for forgiveness of certain student loan debt.
