§1301 of the bankruptcy code implements the co-debtor stay for chapter 13 filers. What this means is you can extend the automatic stay to your co-debtors without them having to also file bankruptcy. So in addition to creditors not being able to collect from you, they can not collect from the co-signors on your debts either. If you’re not paying the debt as part of your bankruptcy, it may be only temporary, but it will last until the creditor actually takes some action in bankruptcy court to lift the stay.
